A multi-currency wallet holds different currencies in one account, letting you convert between them as you need. The Volity multi-currency wallet supports USD, EUR, BTC, ETH, USDT, and USDC natively. $0 to hold any balance, $0 for internal transfers, 1% FX between currencies. All under CySEC 186/12 via UBK Markets, with segregated client funds.

What the Volity multi-currency wallet does

Three core functions:

1. Hold multiple currencies separately. Your wallet contains independent balances for each supported currency. USD does not auto-convert to EUR; EUR does not auto-convert to USDT. Each balance is its own value.

2. Convert at your initiative. When you want to move between currencies, you trigger the conversion. Volity’s rate is the prevailing market mid plus 1% spread. The conversion is instant and the new balance is immediately usable.

3. Spend any balance. Card spending (where available), trading, and internal transfers can use any wallet balance. Fund a trade in EUR even if your trading account currency is USD; the conversion happens at the trade point.

Why use a multi-currency wallet

Five concrete uses:

1. Avoid double-conversion fees. If you fund USD and trade USDJPY, your account never needs to leave USD. If you fund EUR and want to trade EURUSD, no conversion needed. Holding the currency you trade in avoids 1% FX.

2. Lock in conversions when rates favour you. If EUR/USD reaches a level you want, convert immediately and hold the new currency until you need to spend it.

3. Diversify currency exposure. A South African resident funding in USD has currency-diversified savings outside ZAR. Multi-currency wallets are a passive form of FX diversification.

4. Stablecoin holding for short-term liquidity. USDT and USDC let you hold dollar-pegged value without bank reliance. Useful when you want to be in dollars but outside the traditional banking system.

5. Crypto buy-and-hold alongside fiat. Hold BTC for long-term thesis, ETH for long-term thesis, USD/EUR for trading capital, all in one account with no transfer friction.

Security

Funds in the wallet are held in segregated client accounts under trustee arrangements per CySEC 186/12 framework (via UBK Markets). Specifically:

  • Crypto holdings: held in cold storage with reputable custody providers; hot-wallet portion sized for operational needs only
  • Fiat holdings: held in segregated bank accounts separate from Volity’s operational accounts
  • Negative balance protection: even in extreme market moves on leveraged positions, your wallet balance cannot go below zero
  • Two-factor authentication: required for sensitive actions (withdrawals, password changes)
  • Encrypted sessions: TLS 1.3 end-to-end

In the event of Volity insolvency, segregated client funds are legally separate from company assets and protected from creditor claims.

How multi-currency wallet differs from typical bank multi-currency accounts

Banks (Wise, Revolut, Monzo Multi-Currency) offer multi-currency holding but:

  • No crypto support. Banks hold fiat only. Volity holds fiat + crypto in one balance
  • No trading layer. Banks let you spend and transfer. Volity adds 10,000+ tradable instruments
  • Different regulatory regime. Banks are licensed under banking rules. Volity is licensed under MiFID II investment-services rules

A multi-currency bank account is for spending. A Volity multi-currency wallet is for spending, trading, and crypto holding combined.

When you do NOT need a multi-currency wallet

  • You only fund in one currency and only trade pairs that share that currency
  • You hold balances under $500 and conversions are infrequent
  • You prefer single-purpose accounts (one for trading, one for crypto, one for bank)
  • You need physical card spending in many currencies (Volity wallet does not currently offer a debit card; that is a bank product)
